Questions Asked of Learning Platform Providers

Below are questions we asked the participating learning platform providers. Some responses are publicly available in this directory, noted with [publicly available] below. To see providers’ answers to all the questions and to get access to a comparison chart, you need to register, which you can do for free, or log in, if you’re already registered.

  1. [publicly available] What is the name of your company?
  2. [publicly available] What is the name of the platform?
  3. [publicly available] Provide a URL for more information about the platform (e.g., a demo site or product description on your main Web site).
  4. [for registered users] How many associations currently use your platform? You must have at least three association clients currently using the platform to qualify for listing on our site. By “use,” we mean the platform is implemented and operational at that association. We will use the number of association clients to assess the depth of your association experience.
  5. [for registered users] Indicate your experience integrating your platform with the following association management systems (AMSes) for association clients. For each AMS you’ve integrated with, indicate which of four types of integration you’ve implemented: single sign-on (SSO); shopping cart integration, where the AMS is used as the shopping cart and purchase information is passed to your platform; product set-up integration, where products created in the AMS are automatically set up in your platform; and learner data, where your platform passes information about key learner data to the AMS (e.g., course completions and continuing education credits earned).
    1. Aptify
    2. Association Anywhere (ACGI)
    3. iMIS (Advanced Systems International)
    4. MemberClicks
    5. netFORUM (Abila)
    6. Nimble AMS (NimbleUser)
    7. Personify
    8. YourMembership
  6. [for registered users] Indicate your experience integrating your platform with the following online community platforms for a client.
    1. Community Cloud (Salesforce)
    2. Higher Logic
    3. MemberClicks
    4. rasa.io
    5. Small World Community (Personify)
    6. SocialLink (YourMembership)
  7. [for registered users] Is your platform integrated with the Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS) from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)? That is, can your platform generate a report with all required PARS data and transmit this report to ACCME using the ACCME Web service?
Note: Providers may be able to generate reports that contain PARS data, but we asked here about an integrated approach. Also, after sending the question above to participating providers, we learned that ACCME’s Web services only enable reporting on all required PARS data for activities designated as MOC by one of three boards. Therefore, many CME providers are required to use the upload format, though they may also use the Web services for registering activities and, if they offer MOC for one of the support boards, for reporting on the MOC activities. (Our thanks to Web Courseworks for this clarification.)
  8. [publicly available] Does your platform support the Experience API (xAPI), also known as Tin Can?
  9. [publicly available] Does your implementation of the Experience API incorporate cmi5?
  10. [publicly available] Does your platform support multitenancy? That is, can a client centrally manage subportals or subsites that allow it to provide customized access to relevant stakeholders (e.g., chapters or organizational customers)?
  11. [for registered users] Briefly describe the pricing model you use for the platform (e.g., the price is based on the number of enrollments or on the number of active users or is a flat annual or monthly fee).
  12. [for registered users] Do you charge for bandwidth or storage separately from the platform pricing?
  13. [publicly available] Does the LMS support complex credit scenarios? Complex credit scenarios allow administrators to assign, to a single course or activity, multiple credit values (e.g., multiple credit types and/or different credit amounts based on the end user’s state of practice). The platform then awards the appropriate credit type and amount to end users on successful completion of the course or activity.
  14. [for registered users] Do you offer support services to help clients manage live online events (e.g., when offering a Webinar) through your platform?
Note: This question asks about human resources, not technologies. Providers may have proprietary technology or integrations and partnerships to support live online events like Webinars, but here we asked about staffing to support such live online events.
  15. [for registered users] Do you offer support services to help clients capture and/or stream content from live place-based events (e.g., conferences)?
Note: This question asks about human resources, not technologies. Providers may have proprietary technology or integrations and partnerships to support the capture or streaming of content from place-based events like conferences, but here we asked about staffing to support the capture or streaming of content from place-based events.
  16. [for registered users] Do you offer instructional design and custom development services to help clients create content (e.g., online courses) to play in your platform?
