GeoLearning GeoMaestro
The following are highlights from GeoLearning’s GeoMaestro profile in the Association Learning Management Systems report.
GeoLearning is a well-known brand in corporate and government e-learning, serving clients ranging from Google and Dell to the Department of Education. The company’s footprint in the association market has tended, so far, to be among larger associations—100 percent of its clients have an individual membership base of more than 10,000.
GeoLearning was one of the first companies we know of to really focus on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) approach to learning management. The company hosts all implementations of its learning management system and emphasizes a “managed learning services” approach that even extends to providing end-user support for the more than 30,000 third-party course titles it offers through its LMS, GeoMaestro.
A key focus in the development of the latest version of GeoMaestro was to ensure a consistent interface and process throughout for administrators. An administrator who understands how to configure a course will encounter much the same process in configuring an assessment or a report. Not surprisingly, the company reports that this increased consistency has led to a significant drop in the training time required for customers to feel comfortable with the system.
- Even with the reduced training time, however, customers will likely face a learning curve with this system, if only because of its wide range of features and functionalities. GeoMaestro is arguably the most configurable of the systems we reviewed—nearly all parts of the system exist as objects, or widgets, that can be configured on an individual basis and tied to specific settings for an individual user or user group. The flexibility is tremendous—but some associations may find it overwhelming.
- The look, feel, and layout of the end-user interface can be a managed through a WYSIWYG editor that manipulates the cascading style sheet (CSS) for the specified template. Templates can be tied to user groups, meaning it is possible to configure a distinct look and feel for a chapter or department without complex architectural considerations.
- GeoMaestro provides application programming interfaces (APIs) for nearly every part of the system as part of the standard license. While the company reports no integrations with association management systems, the existence of a comprehensive set of APIs certainly makes the prospect of integration less daunting.
- For organizations that do not want to integrate with an existing e-commerce system (through their AMS, for example), GeoMaestro provides very good shopping cart capabilities.
- GeoLearning’s existing relationships with 25 different content vendors representing more than 30,000 course titles may be a boon to organizations hoping to get a catalog of offerings up and running quickly.
- GeoMaestro has good tools for handling prescribed learning paths for certifications as well as for offering optional, elective courses that learners can select.
- The company indicates that its standard report functionality handles 85 to 90 percent of customer reporting needs, but the system also provides very good tools for creating ad hoc reports.
GeoMaestro is arguably the most feature-rich system we reviewed, but its price, particularly at high user volumes, may be too much for some organizations. Another option is GeoOnDemand, which makes many of GeoMaestro’s features available for a per learner cost of $4.95 per month.
