Who’s Your Chief Learning Officer?

by Jeff Cobb on January 26, 2010

way-forward

Does your membership organization have someone who you would consider your chief learning officer? That is:

  • Someone who is empowered to make strategic decisions and see that they get implemented? (Chief)
  • Someone who thinks beyond educational events and training to consider the full richness and complexity of knowledge management and capability building in your field or industry? (Learning)
  • Someone who is held officially accountable for your organization’s responsibility to advance member learning? (Officer)

I have encountered few associations – in fact, only one I can remember – that actually had a person who wore the title Chief Learning Officer, but leaving aside the specific title, do you have someone in your organization that fits the general description above?

The traditional idea of “membership” is under tremendous pressure as people find more and more – and free and easy – opportunities for connecting in meaningful ways. Simply providing a a “platform” for connecting is no longer the value proposition it used to be for associations. On the other hand, establishing and leading a vision for capability building across your membership base and the broader field or industry in which it works – well, in my book, that sounds compelling. Provide me with the best set of strategies and tools for how I can participate in such a vision – preferably with less emphasis on generic, homogeneous conference-type events – and I’m there.

Seems like now is a good time for thinking about whether – and why – you need someone to fill the “chief learning office” role, no matter what you call it. What do you think?
